Shipping container dimensions

Find the right size mini, storage or shipping container.

Our shipping container selection includes 10-foot and 45-foot containers, as well as 6’-30’ mini and storage containers. These containers are suitable in size, weight, shape, and other features for various transportation and storage needs.

Container models are labeled with the following abbreviations:

  • DC (Dry Cargo – Standard ISO shipping container)
  • HC (High Cube – Higher than a standard DC container)
  • OS (Open Side – Full-length doors on the long side and double doors on the short end)
  • OT (Open Top – Replaced roof with a tarp, loaded from the top)

For heavy items, a 20-foot container may be the most cost-effective solution, as weight limits are reached before space runs out. For lighter but more voluminous goods, a 40-foot container is likely a better option.

Choosing the right type of shipping container can significantly impact freight costs, as containers are designed for different uses, and their costs vary based on the goods being transported, the destination, and the container’s features.

1. Container size

  • 40-foot containers: Suitable for larger shipments. Unit costs (e.g., per cubic meter or ton) can be lower if the container’s capacity is fully utilized.
  • 20-foot containers: Cheaper to rent and transport but have limited volume. Ideal for smaller shipments or heavy items where weight limits are reached first.

2. Freight and storage optimization

  • Always choose a container type based on the volume of goods and whether the goods can withstand environmental temperature changes.
  • Packing goods as densely as possible saves space and allows for using the smallest container. The container size directly impacts transportation and storage costs.
  • If the container is used as storage, consider a model with side doors or double doors on both ends for easy access to all items.

3. Container type

  • Dry Container (general-purpose container): The most affordable option for standard use. Suitable for goods not sensitive to moisture or temperature changes.
  • Reefer Container: (temperature-controlled container): More expensive to rent and use due to energy consumption and special handling requirements. Needed for food, pharmaceuticals, or other temperature-sensitive goods.
  • Open Top / Flat Rack containers: Used for large or irregularly shaped goods that cannot be loaded through standard container doors. These are typically used for taller, wider, or heavier loads.

4. Container selection

Consider the following when choosing a container:

  • Volume and total weight of goods. Transportation and storage costs are generally directly tied to container size.
  • Whether goods can be loaded and unloaded through the container’s standard doors or require additional doors, an open-top container, or an open flat rack platform.
  • Whether the container needs to be insulated and temperature-controlled or if a standard uninsulated container suffices.

5. Ease of loading and unloading

  • Shipping containers, as well as mini and storage containers, come with various door configurations. Standard DC and HC containers have double doors on the short end. However, containers with doors on all sides or from the top are also available.
  • To ease loading and unloading, our range includes helpful accessories such as loading ramps, rolling wheels, container legs, stands, and stairs.

6. Availability and price

  • We typically have all container sizes and models in stock. If not, they can usually be arranged within 1-10 business days.
  • Container prices also depend on our warehouse location and the container model.

By selecting the right container based on the nature and volume of goods, you can significantly save on freight and storage costs while ensuring smooth loading and unloading of your products.
